Check your role and deadline
According to the European Commission’s current guidance, application begins on 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators. The exception is micro and small operators already covered by EUTR, for whom 30 December 2026 applies. Check the exact product, tariff classification and supply-chain role before concluding which obligations apply.
Organise the information flow
Preparation is best managed as an operational project. First establish who collects supplier information, who reviews it and who approves further action. Then connect the order, production batch and documentation so the information trail remains understandable after delivery.
Create a gap list and assign an owner to each request. A pilot review of one actual shipment can reveal where the data flow breaks down before the same approach is extended to other partners.
Certification and statutory obligations
FSC certification can support the quality of evidence, but does not replace EUDR due diligence. PEFC also distinguishes voluntary certification from the final compliance decision. Treat existing certificates as part of the documentation, checking their scope and relevance to the specific transaction.
A practical starting point
